| "The DPA Awards salute innovation and achievement by leading companies, teams and individuals across the data and digital publishing sector, " said association director, Jerry Gosney, welcoming members and their guests to Thursday's gala presentation dinner at Brighton's Grand Hotel. "But this year," he continued, "they had another ingredient, the determination shown by publishers who pushed on with development and expansion despite the severe market downturn. It's a truism, but our winners show that recession creates its own opportunities for those brave enough to go after it." It was a point picked up by Tom Hempenstall, chairman of the judging panel, who commented that the combination of the economic downturn coupled with rapidly changing business models, had created the perfect storm for publishers. "It was encouraging," he said, "to see how many companies had responded by developing highly innovative web services which clearly help users improve efficiency and lower their own costs.” The Awards night was hosted by Dr Phil Hammond who has a regular column in Private Eye and guests on BBC’s News Quiz. This year there were new categories for Publishing Executive of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Last year at the DPA Awards the talk was all about recession, this year members and guests were buoyed that the worst could be over and recovery around the corner. It made for a great evening.
